Is migration an effective adaptation to climate-related agricultural distress in sub-Saharan Africa?

Abstract Migration is often considered a form of climate change adaptation by which individuals, households, and communities seek to reduce the risks associated with change. In this study, we examine first-time seasonal migration out village in North-Western Burkina Faso neighbouring countries, triggered more irregular rainfall patterns. Through set 52 qualitative interviews, analyse perceptions migrants themselves as well sending community regarding consequences. Men migrated off-season, whereas women stayed behind. Most migrant men wives perceive have negative consequences for their socio-economic situation health. Despite this, lack options deteriorating environmental conditions might force move again. We interpreted range narratives provided against background scientific literature on adaptation. While could be beneficial, study challenges notion an effective strategy people climate-vulnerable settings, who other options.
